Project Updates
Progress Update – October 2016 (return to the current progress update)
Thank you for your continued interest in MSD's Werk & Westbourne Enhanced High Rate Treatment (WWEHRT) Facility, situated on the southwest corner of the Werk Road & Westbourne Drive intersection. This facility will allow MSD to control most combined sewer overflow events at this site, provide better protection of public health and the local environment, eliminate sewer debris, and reduce sewer odors in the near vicinity. The following is a summary of the project's progress.
PROJECT STATUS UPDATE
Preliminary construction activities associated with the WWEHRT Facility have begun. Crews are now on site bringing in construction materials, setting up staging and parking areas, completing construction-area clearing tasks and beginning preliminary excavation. Temporary fencing has also been installed around the site.
MSD is putting a number of measures in place to minimize disruption to the neighborhood as much as possible. Such measures include:
- Working during normal workday hours, generally 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays
- Creating construction staging and on-site parking areas for crews to reduce the amount of construction-related traffic on nearby roads
- Consolidating the number of supply deliveries as much as possible
Signage has been installed to alert drivers to the construction. Large construction vehicles are now moving through the area and entering and exiting the site. Please use caution as you travel through the intersection. Flaggers are on site to help keep traffic flowing as smoothly as possible.
MSD will continue to send out periodic construction updates by email to area residents and community members and will post updates on the project website. MSD also invites you to share your questions and comments as construction moves forward.

WHAT WILL THE WWEHRT FACILITY LOOK LIKE?
MSD is sensitive to the fact that the Werk & Westbourne EHRT Facility will be built in a residential neighborhood. Though the building will be taller and longer than other structures in the immediate area, elements included in the facility’s exterior design will reflect the look and feel of nearby homes and buildings. These include a brick façade, landscaping and a decorative fence that will surround the facility. The entrance to the property will be recessed so that vehicles turning into the site will be off the main road as much as possible. In addition, a sidewalk will be constructed in front of the facility along Werk Road.
Additional conceptual renderings of how the completed facility will look are posted on the project website (five different views of the facility are provided under the Facility Renderings heading on the right hand side of the page). More detailed information about the WWEHRT Facility – including its purpose, benefits, operations and appearance – is provided in the WWEHRT 2015 Newsletter.
COMMUNITY MEETING MATERIALS AVAILABLE ONLINE
Last October, MSD held a community information meeting to discuss with neighbors the purpose of the WWEHRT Facility, how it will operate and what it will look like once construction is complete. MSD also asked for input about the types of plants and trees the community wanted placed around the site and has developed a landscaping plan using the feedback received. Copies of the materials shared at the meeting are posted on the project website under the Community Information Meeting heading.
