Lick Run Greenway
(construction underway)

Rendering of Recreation Area (ground level)
Construction of the Lick Run Greenway is well underway. Photo shows construction of a 1.5-mile long underground stormwater conveyance box to handle large rainstorms. The creek will be built on top of this structure.

  • Anticipated construction: July 2017 to Fall 2019 (substantially complete by Dec 2018; restoration and replacement of plantings through Fall 2021)

  • 1.5-mile stormwater conveyance system to convey (carry) stormwater to the Mill Creek. Highlights include:

    • Wetland forebay and rain gardens along old Queen City Avenue.

    • Headwaters park east of White Street, with off-street parking. This is where the creek starts.

    • 1-mile-long creek.

    • Improved recreational area, including a new playground and basketball courts, concrete stage area, pedestrian bridge over the stream and off-street parking. The existing water sprayground stays in place and one of the two existing shelters will be relocated.

    • Pond area east of Harrison Avenue.

    • Stormwater conveyance box underneath the entire system to handle large rainstorms.

    • Additional details:

      • Maintenance/Multi-use access paths.

      • Lighting.

      • Safety railing.

      • Retaining wall along urban waterway and along Westwood Avenue.

      • Five vehicle bridges at Harrison Avenue, Grand Avenue, Quebec Road, Van Hart and Kebler.

      • One pedestrian bridge over the urban waterway in the civic recreation area.

      • Extensive landscaping and planting along the urban waterway.

      • Stormwater planters along south side of Queen City Avenue.

      • Recirculation of water from the pond to the headwaters area.

  • 16,000 linear feet of storm sewers to collect stormwater from the areas adjacent to the Greenway.

Construction of the $90 million Lick Run Greenway began in early July 2017 and will continue through fall 2019. Our contractor - Kokosing Industrial, Inc. - is currently excavating soils, installing a 1.5-mile long underground stormwater conveyance box for flood control, and working on the Harrison Avenue, Kebler Street and Van Hart Street bridges, among other activities.
