Cincinnati Reds Teamed Up With MSD on Roselawn Park Project
What do the Cincinnati Reds and the Metropolitan Sewer District of Greater Cincinnati (MSD) have in common? Clean water.
The Reds and MSD teamed up in 2014 to sustainably manage stormwater at the P&G Cincinnati MLB Urban Youth Academy at Cincinnati's Roselawn Park. MSD's project improves water quality, beautifies the park and reduces sewer overflows into the Mill Creek.

The project included three bioinfiltration basins, which are large rain gardens that collect, absorb and clean stormwater runoff from the park grounds, parking lot and entrance drive using native plants and special soils. The basins prevent about 507,000 gallons of stormwater each year from entering our combined sewer system and contributing to sewer overflows.
MSD's project was coordinated with construction of the permanent home for the Reds Urban Youth Academy, a Reds Community Fund project that features a state-of-the-art recreational complex including an indoor practice facility and four outdoor ball fields. The academy offers free, year-round baseball and softball instruction to youths aged 8-18.
"This is one of the most significant community investments in Reds history, and we are proud to partner with MSD to help improve the environment and water quality." said Phil Castellini, Reds COO.
One of the new ball fields includes a synthetic turf surface equipped with an underdrain system that collects stormwater runoff and routes it to a bioinfiltration basin located west of the existing parking lot.
Stormwater runoff from the indoor practice facility and its adjacent drainage area is routed to a bioinfiltration basin located on the southeast side of the building.
MSD project partners included the Cincinnati Recreation Commission (CRC) and Cincinnati Park Board.
